The German Cockroach is best recognized by its tan color and dark brown stripes. They are on the smaller side – measuring 5/8” to 1/2″ long. Unfortunately for homeowners, they are very common in Georgia and can live up to 12 months! Allow us to shed some light on German cockroaches and how our pest control measures can safeguard your home.
1. German Cockroaches are active at night.
German cockroaches are nocturnal pests, meaning they are active at night and hide during the day. Because of this characteristic, it’s likely that you’ll spot signs of an infestation before seeing a cockroach! Signs that you have a cockroach infestation include:
- Oily or musty odor
- Cockroach droppings
- Cockroach skin/shedding

2. German Cockroaches gravitate toward humid rooms.
Two areas of your home that may be infested with cockroaches are your kitchen and bathrooms. They have two vital elements to a cockroach’s survival – food and water. To minimize the chance of German cockroaches setting up shop in these rooms, consider the following tips:
Kitchen
- Fix leaks.
- Sweep the floor.
- Take the trash out every night.
- Wipe countertops and appliances.
Bathroom
- Fix leaks.
- Keep the door open after use, so humidity levels can decrease.
- Use the exhaust fan during every shower and bath.
- Use a dehumidifier, if needed, to reduce excessive moisture in the air.
3. German Cockroaches can make asthma and allergy symptoms flare.
The sight of cockroach droppings and skin can make your skin crawl… and cause an allergic reaction! When these elements are stirred into the air, your immune system can be triggered to respond negatively. This may lead to sneezing, congestion, coughing, watery eyes, and running nose.
